The 100 Largest Cities in the United States

New York, NY remains far and away America's largest city with 8,516,202 residents — more than double second-place Los Angeles. This page ranks the 100 most populous cities in the country, with income, age, and poverty figures for each.

Only 9 US cities have more than a million residents within their municipal limits — far fewer than most people guess, because metropolitan areas sprawl across many separate municipalities. City-limit population is what this table measures, which is why famously large metros can appear smaller here than suburbs-included figures suggest. California places 17 cities in the top 100, more than any other state.

The list rewards annexation-friendly geography: Sun Belt cities that absorbed their suburbs rank far above older Northeastern cities of similar metro size that are hemmed in by incorporated neighbors. Big-city economics vary just as widely — median household incomes in the top 100 span more than a threefold range, and several of the largest cities post poverty rates well above the national 12.4%. About This Ranking

All figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates, the Bureau's most reliable dataset for state and local statistics. Because estimates pool five years of survey responses, they describe a recent period rather than a single moment, and small differences between closely ranked entries may fall within the survey's margin of error.
